A Dozen Safety Tips

You can probably use one or more of these every day.

1. If you want to be safe, you have to be seen. Wear high visibility clothing on or near a highway right-of-way, daytime and nighttime and anywhere on a construction site.

2. Follow the procedures that are known and understood for the job at hand. If you don't understand something, ASK.

3. Alert your co-workers to hazards and stop them from doing something that will hurt them or the crew.

4. Lift with the muscles in your legs using a smooth motion without jerking. Move your feet and body to face where you'll place the object. Avoid twisting your upper body.

5. When you're working on a busy construction site, make it a habit to frequently look up and around. If everyone does this, it's likely there will be a set of eyes on the surroundings at all times.

6. It is the responsibility of the driver or operator to ensure their cargo and equipment is loaded and secured to keep it from leaking, spilling, blowing, or falling from a vehicle.

7. There is proper personal protective equipment for chain sawing, electric arc and fuel gas welding, and many other tasks. If you need it, ask for it.

8. There's a good reason that a full body harness is required when working out of any type of aerial lift, bucket truck, or at heights over six feet.  You don't want to fall and get seriously hurt or killed.

9. Operating equipment on a slope can be dangerous. Don't make sharp turns or sudden moves. A full loader bucket must be kept close to the ground and will usually require backing up the hill.

10. Aluminum ladders and electrical work don't mix. And, if getting to the work is awkward and dangerous, you should probably figure out another way to get it done safely.

11. If you need access to something out of reach, don't improvise with a cart on rollers, or a chair or table. Get a stepladder and use it properly.

12. Good housekeeping is integral to a safe workplace. Clean up trash, tripping hazards, collected junk, stray tools, obsolete parts and equipment.
